Abstract

Introduction: Acute cholecystitis is a huge burden on the healthcare system. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard in the care for patients with acute cholecystitis. Objective: Evaluation of results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the treatment of acute cholecystitis at Ninh Thuan provincial general hospital. Method: A descriptive retrospective study of 44 patients with acute cholecystitis who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the department of general surgery from January 2022 to October 2024. Results: Among the 44 patients, females accounted for 61.4%, with a mean age of 53.9. The rate of comorbidities was high (84.1%), with hypertension being the most common (29.5%). Clinical symptoms included abdominal pain (100%), primarily in the right upper quadrant (63.6%), fever ≥38°C (34.1%), positive Murphy’s sign (68.2%), and palpable gallbladder (22.7%). Laboratory findings showed leukocytosis (≥10-15G/L) in 47.7%. Ultrasound revealed gallbladder wall thickening (100%) and pericholecystic fluid (45.5%). The prevalence of gallstones was 84.1%. A total of 68.2% of patients underwent surgery within 72 hours of hospital admission. The success rate of laparoscopic cholecystectomy was 90.9%, with 9.1% requiring conversion to open surgery. Intraoperative complications occurred in 4.5% of cases. Postoperative complications included surgical site infection (2.3%), subhepatic fluid collection (9.1%), and bile leakage (2.3%). Conclusion: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a safe and effective procedure for treating acute cholecystitis, with a low complication rate.
