Abstract

Objective: To investigate the Neutrophil/ Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) and Platelet/Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) and their associations with several clinical and paraclinical parameters in maintenance hemodialysis patients. Subjects and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 90 MHD patients and 30 age- and gender-matched healthy controls at Military Hospital 103 from September 2024 to June 2025. Clinical and paraclinical characteristics of the study subjects were collected, and NLR and PLR indices were calculated from peripheral cell blood count. Results: The NLR in the patient group was 3.1 (2.40 – 4.21), significantly higher than in the control group which was 1.86 (1.45 – 2.24) with p<0.001. The PLR in the patient group was 154.84 (119.66 – 201.92), significantly higher than in the control group which was 122.38 (96.62 – 149.0), with p=0.001. 43% of patients had elevated NLR, 11% had elevated PLR only, and 8% had simultaneous elevation of both indices. PCT (OR=3.69, p=0.027) was an independent factor associated with increased NLR, diabetes mellitus (OR=5.29, p=0.045) was an independent factor associated with increased PLR, and CRP (OR=1.189, p=0.026) was an independent factor associated with increased NLR and PLR. Conclusion: NLR and PLR increased in MHD patients. PCT, CRP, and diabetes mellitus were independent factors associated with NLR and PLR.
