ASSESSMENT OF THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF CANDIDA SPECIES CAUSING ONYCHOMYCOSIS TO SELECTED ANTIFUNGAL AGENTS AT THE NATIONAL DERMATOLOGY HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To identify Candida species causing onychomycosis and to assess their susceptibility to itraconazole and fluconazole in patients examined at the National Dermatology Hospital. Subjects: Patients diagnosed with onychomycosis at the National Dermatology Hospital from January 2025 to July 2025. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Sample size: 76 patients. Results: A total of 39 Candida isolates causing onychomycosis were obtained, accounting for 51.3%. Among these, C. tropicalis was the most common with 11 isolates (28.2%), followed by C. glabrata with 9 isolates (23.1%). Regarding antifungal susceptibility, C. albicans showed 85.7% susceptibility to itraconazole and 71.4% to fluconazole; C. tropicalis showed 72.7% susceptibility to itraconazole and 81.8% to fluconazole; C. parapsilosis showed 100% susceptibility to itraconazole and 80% to fluconazole; C. glabrata showed 66.7% susceptibility to itraconazole and 88.9% to fluconazole; C. krusei was susceptible to itraconazole at 50% and to fluconazole at 100%; C. guilliermondii was susceptible to itraconazole at 75% and to fluconazole at 100%. Conclusion: Certain Candida species causing onychomycosis have demonstrated resistance to commonly used systemic antifungal agents.
