POSTOPERATIVE VITAMIN B12 LEVELS AND POSTOPERATIVE VITAMIN B12 LEVELS AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS IN GASTRIC CANCER PATIENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To assess postoperative vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with gastric cancer (GC) and its associations with clinical and paraclinical characteristics. Subjects and Methods: This study was conducted on 68 patients with GC treated at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, 108 Military Central Hospital, from July 2025 to October 2025. Plasma vitamin B12 levels were quantified using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay method. Clinical and paraclinical data were collected, and the associations between these parameters and postoperative vitamin B12 levels were analyzed one month after gastrectomy. Results: The prevalence of postoperative vitamin B12 deficiency was 19,1%. Significant associations were found between B12 deficiency and disease stage (p = 0,002), tumor size (p = 0,055), depth of invasion (p = 0,051), and postoperative anemia (p < 0.001). Higher risks of B12 deficiency were observed in patients with advanced disease stages (OR = 14,4) and reduced red blood cell/hemoglobin indices (OR = 22,77 and 22). Conclusion: Vitamin B12 deficiency is common among patients with gastric cancer after surgery, particularly in those with advanced-stage disease and a higher prevalence of anemia.
