COMPARISON OF APICAL EXTRUSION RISK OF IRRIGATION SOLUTIONS USING IRRIFLEX NEEDLES VERSUS CANALPRO SIDE-PORT TIPS: AN IN VITRO STUDY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the most widely used root canal irrigant, but apical extrusion of NaOCl is a serious complication. IrriFlex (Produits Dentaires, Switzerland) is a next-generation, flexible polypropylene, side-vented needle with two back-facing outlets at the tip, designed to reduce apical extrusion compared with stainless steel needles. Its actual performance, however, remains under investigation, particularly in curved root canals. Objective: To compare the risk of apical irrigant extrusion between IrriFlex and CanalPro Side-Port Tips needles in vitro. Materials and methods: Thirty-six extracted human molars with root canals negotiable to full working length only with instruments smaller than size 20 and presenting a curvature of 15°–25° (Schneider) were selected. Teeth were assigned to two groups: group I, irrigation with IrriFlex; group C, irrigation with CanalPro Side-Port Tips. Each root canal was irrigated with 2.5 ml of 3% NaOCl over 30 seconds. The percentage of apically extruded irrigant was quantified with ImageJ software (NIH, USA). Data normality was evaluated with the Shapiro–Wilk test, and groups were compared using an Independent-Samples T-test (p < 0.05). Results: The IrriFlex group showed a significantly higher mean percentage of apical irrigant extrusion (44.29 ± 4.66%) than the CanalPro Side-Port Tips group (26.37 ± 6.78%; p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, IrriFlex irrigation needles were associated with a higher risk of apical extrusion than CanalPro Side-Port Tips in root canals with curvatures of 15°–25°.
