EMOTIONAL REACTIVITY INCREASES WITH BURN SURFACE AREA: EVIDENCE FROM A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY OF 146 HOSPITALIZED BURN PATIENTS

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between clinical indicators of burn wounds (TBSA, burn depth) and emotional reactivity, as well as emotion regulation strategies (emotional suppression, cognitive reappraisal) in burn patients.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2024 to January 2025 on 146 inpatient burn patients (aged 18-80 years) at Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital. Pearson correlation analysis and one-way ANOVA were used to examine the relationships between variables and emotional reactivity.

Results: Emotional reactivity showed a positive correlation with TBSA (r = 0.31, p = 0.001). Emotional suppression (r = 0.293, p = 0.002) and cognitive reappraisal (r = 0.314, p = 0.001) in emotion regulation (r = 0.34, p = 0.001) also showed positive correlations with emotional reactivity. However, burn depth had no significant effect on emotional reactivity (F(2, 143) = 0.849, p = 0.43).

Conclusion: Emotional reactivity in burn patients is significantly associated with burn area (TBSA) and emotion regulation strategies. Burn depth showed no statistically significant difference. Early psychological assessment and intervention should be prioritized for patients with larger burn areas, and psychological support measures focusing on healthy emotion regulation mechanisms should be integrated into burn care protocols to help patients manage emotional responses more effectively, rather than suppressing emotions.
