CLINICAL OUTCOMES OF PLATE FIXATION FOR CLOSED HUMERAL SHAFT FRACTURES IN ADULTS: A STUDY AT MILITARY HOSPITAL 5
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the treatment outcomes of plate fixation for closed humeral shaft fractures in adults.
Material and methods: A descriptive study was conducted on 43 patients with closed humeral shaft fractures treated with plate osteosynthesis at Military Hospital 5, Military Region 3 from 2018 to 2023. Among them, 30 patients were followed up for long-term outcomes after surgery. The outcomes were evaluated based on radiographic bone union, functional recovery of the shoulder and elbow joints, overall results according to the modified Neer score, and postoperative complications.
Results: The mean age of the study population was 51.0 ± 2.99 years, with a similar distribution between males and females. Fractures most commonly occurred in the middle third of the humeral shaft (65.1%), and the majority were classified as AO type A fractures (60.4%). Among the 30 patients with long-term follow-up, the mean follow-up duration was 34.5 ± 5.4 months, with the longest follow-up of 65 months. The bone union rate was 100%, including 86.7% excellent results and 13.3% good results. No cases of delayed union or nonunion were recorded. In addition, no major postoperative complications such as deep infection, iatrogenic radial nerve injury, or implant-related complications were observed.
Conclusion: Plate fixation is an effective treatment method for closed humeral shaft fractures in adults, providing stable fixation, a high bone union rate, and good functional recovery.
