Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with popliteal artery injury at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital during the period 2020–2024.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 30 patients aged ≥16 years who were diagnosed with popliteal artery injury and treated at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital from January 1, 2020 to December 30, 2024
Result: Open fractures were predominant (86.67%). The most common preoperative clinical sign was absent distal pulse (73.33%), accompanied by signs of limb ischemia such as pallor, coldness, and paresthesia. The majority of patients had a MESS score ≤7 (73.33%), while traumatic shock (6.67%) and compartment syndrome (13.33%) were less frequent. The mean operative time was 148.33 ± 57.15 minutes, and the mean revascularization time was 125.42 ± 53.52 minutes. On paraclinical evaluation, loss of popliteal artery signal on CTA was the most common finding (53.33%). Tibial plateau fractures were the most frequently observed fracture type on plain radiographs (66.67%).
Conclusion: Popliteal artery injury is predominantly associated with open fractures, with typical clinical manifestations including absent distal pulses and signs of limb ischemia. Most patients present with a moderate severity of injury (MESS ≤ 7), and severe complications such as shock or compartment syndrome are relatively uncommon. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) frequently demonstrates loss of popliteal artery signal, while tibial plateau fractures are the most common associated skeletal injuries. Operative and revascularization times are relatively prolonged.
