CLINICAL AND RADIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND INITIAL OUTCOMES OF CLOSED REDUCTION FOR NASAL BONE FRACTURES AT GIA DINH PEOPLE’S HOSPITAL

Abstract
Objective: To describe clinical and radiological characteristics, initial outcomes after closed reduction, and factors associated with initial outcomes in patients with nasal bone fractures (NBF) at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital.
Subjects and methods: This retrospective descriptive analytical study included 30 patients with NBF treated by closed reduction at the Department of Otolaryngology, Gia Dinh People’s Hospital, during 2022-2023. Clinical features, CT scan findings, timing of intervention, anesthesia, and initial post-reduction outcomes were collected from medical records. Categorical variables were compared using two-sided Fisher’s exact test.
Results: Men accounted for 76.7%, and the 20-39-year age group represented 60.0%. Traffic accidents were the most common cause (36.7%). Frequent symptoms included epistaxis (90.0%), nasal pain (83.3%), and nasal swelling (80.0%). CT scan showed bone displacement in 73.3% of cases and associated septal deviation in 36.7%. Most patients underwent intervention within 3 days after trauma (83.3%) under local anesthesia (86.7%). Good initial outcomes were recorded in 80.0%. Intervention within 3 days and absence of associated septal deviation were related to better initial outcomes (p=0.041 and p=0.016).
Conclusion: Closed reduction yielded favorable initial outcomes in most NBF patients in this study. Early intervention and septal status should be considered when evaluating, counseling, and monitoring patients.
