Abstract

Background: Psoriasis is a common dermatitis that not only affects externally but also impairs quality of life both physically and mentally. Recently, many studies have focused on sleep disorders in patients with psoriasis, as these conditions increase the risk of disease onset and exacerbate psoriasis through pro-inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between sleep disorders and related factors in patients with psoriasis.

Subjects and Methods: This descriptive case series included plaque psoriasis patients aged ≥18 years old with sleep disorders, conducted at the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology from January 2025 to October 2025. Sleep quality was evaluated using the validated Vietnamese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire.

Results: Our study included 101 patients, of whom 63 were male (62.4%), with a mean age of 50.24 ± 15.29 years. The mean PSQI score was 8.99 ± 3.51. Mild sleep disturbance accounted for 64.36%, moderate for 28.71%, and severe for 6.93%. Among the components, “sleep latency” had the highest score (2.19 ± 0.95). There was a positive correlation between age, duration of psoriasis, and the severity of sleep disturbances according to PSQI scores (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: Sleep quality disturbance is common among elderly patients with psoriasis and those with long disease durations. Further large-scale cohort studies are needed to more accurately evaluate the impact of sleep quality disturbances over the course of psoriasis progression.
