RECONSTRUCTION OF POST-BURN FINGER SCAR CONTRACTURES

Abstract

Introduction: Postburn scar of the fingers are common injuries with many different forms. In which, finger’scontractivescar is the most common and severely affects. Managing such condition is often challenging and various techniques have been proposed. The choice of technique depends on the degree of finger contraction and the surgeon's preference. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 30 patients (22 men and 8 women), aged from 15 months to 55 years old, with 56 postburn scar contracture of the fingers which were reconstructed by local flaps and full-thickness skin grafts. Surgical results were assessed according to the criteria of healing, function, and aesthetics after 3 months. Results: The majority of flaps and skin grafts survived, the function of the fingers improved. Conclusion: Correct assessment of the morphology and severity of postburn finger scar contractures aids surgeons in selecting the appropriate reconstruction method, resulting in satisfactory functional and aesthetic results.
