Abstract

Objectives/Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the preoperative diagnosis of lumbar disc herniation. Methods and results: Fifty-two patients with lumbar disc herniation diagnosed at MRI underwent surgery. The findings at operation were compared to assess the sensitivity, the specificity and the accuracy of MRI characterization. Lumbar disc herniations were classified into central herniation (45.3%), right and left posterolateral herniation (25% and 21.9%, respectively). L5 and S1 were the most compressed nerve root by disc herniation (50.8% and 27.7%, respectively). The sensitivity, the specificity and the accuracy in the characterization of lumbar disc herniation were high (96.9% - 100%).  Conclusions: Our results suggest MRI could play an important role in the preoperative diagnosis and management of lumbar disc herniation.
