Abstract

Abstract: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a serious complication in patients with chronic liver disease. The definition and criteria of acute on chronic liver failure differ between the West (European and American countries) and the East (Asia). Treatment of acute on chronic liver failure is mainly symptomatic and removing precipitating factors. The disease has a high mortality rate, often requiring liver transplantation or therapeutic plasma exchange. We report a 73 year-old male patient, diagnosed with acute-on-chronic liver failure, grade 2 (10 points) due to acute exacerbations of chronic hepatitis B, according to the Asian Pacific association for the study of the liver). The patient was hospitalized in a state of jaundice, lost appetite, fatigue, dark yellow urine. The patient poorly responsed to conventional treatment and he was treated with plasma exchange.
