EARLY RESULTS OF ACCELERATED RADIATION THERAPY WITH OR WITHOUT CONCURRENT CHEMOTHERAPY FOR NASOPHARYNGEAL CARCINOMA IN THAI NGUYEN

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate early results of accelerated radiation therapy with or without concurrent chemotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma at Thai Nguyen Oncology Center. Subjects and research methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study and analysis on 46 patients with the stage II-IVa nasopharyngeal carcinoma with indications for radical treatment from January 2021 to July 2022. Results: Mean age was 48.15 ± 12.28 years old (range, 27 - 70 years old), male to female ratio was 2.3:1. Rates of stages from II to IVa were 47.8, 37.0 and 15.2%, respectively. At the first re-examination:  100% of patients reduced in functional symptoms (of which, there were 34 patients without symptoms accounting for 73.9%). 100% of cases responded to treatment (even the primary tumor as well as regional lymph node status). The rate of complete response reached 71.7% (33 patients), the remaining 13 cases had partial response (28.3%). Conclusion: Accelerated radiation therapy with or without concurrent chemotherapy for the stage II - IVa nasopharyngeal carcinoma has a good response rate.
