Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the nutritional status and investigate related factors in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease stages 3-5 who have not yet received replacement therapy. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study. Inpatients ≥ 60 years old with chronic kidney disease treated at the Department of Nephrology, Huu Nghi Hospital. Results: The prevalence of malnutrition according to MNA was 14.1%, BMI was 13.2%, and serum albumin concentration was 23.6%. The mean MNA scores gradually decreased by stages of CKD 3, 4, and 5 with MNA scores of 24.1±3.1; 22.1±4.4; 21.0±3.6 points, respectively (p < 0.05). Nutritional status was related to disease stage (OR = 3.1, 95%CI: 1.1-9.8, p < 0.05), serum albumin < 35 g/L (OR 5.8, 95%CI: 1.8-21.5, p < 0.05) and anemia status (OR = 3.0, 95%CI: 1.1-8.3, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Older patients with chronic kidney disease have a high rate of malnutrition. There is an association between malnutrition with disease stage, serum albumin level, and anemia status.
