Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: Assess the orthodontic treatment need according to the IOTN and determine the relationship between the orthodontic treatment need index according to the IOTN and the self-confidence index according to the Rosenberg scale. Subjects and research methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study by clinical examination and measurement on agar arches and a qualitative study by in-depth interviews based on a questionnaire of the Rosenberg scale over 305 Vietnam National University, Hanoi students (136 men, 169 women) aged 18-24 years old. Results: The orthodontic treatment need according to IOTN, grade 1 accounted for the highest percentage (35.7%), then grade 4 (20.7%), grade 2 (1.7%), grade 5 (15.4%) and grade 3 (11.5%), need for no treatment accounted for the highest rate (52,4%), need for treatment accounted for the lowest rate (8.9%). Self-confidence index according to the Rosenberg scale, low confidence level accounts for the majority (59.7%), good confidence index accounts for a lower percentage (36,3%), and very good confidence index accounts for small percentage (4.0%). The aesthetic conponent at grade 1 and grade 4 with a low self-confident index accounted for the highest percentage (22.6% and 13.4%). The aesthetic conponent need at grade 2 and 3 with a very good self-confident index had the lowest rate (0.3%), the dental health conponent at grade 1 and 2 (without treatment) with low and good self-confidence according to Rosenberg's scale accounted for the highest percentage (31.8% and 19.1%). Conclusion: In the same level of aesthetic conponents, self-confidence decreases in order of low, good and very good. There is no relationship between the orthodontic treatment need according to IOTN and the self-confidence index according to Rosenberg's scale.
