Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global health concern, with an increasing prevalence over time. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is considered a risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and its prevalence is also on the rise, making it a significant concern for patients with T2DM, especially those with comorbidities such as cardiovascular diseases. While there is no specific statistic on the prevalence of MetS in Vietnam, recent studies suggest an increasing trend of MetS in T2DM patients. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of MetS in T2DM patients at Tra Vinh University Hospital. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of MetS in T2DM patients at Tra Vinh University Hospital. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving 184 T2DM patients receiving treatment at Tra Vinh University Hospital from November to December 2022. MetS was diagnosed based on the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Results: The prevalence of MetS in T2DM patients at Tra Vinh University Hospital was 86.41%, with a higher prevalence among female patients (73.58%) compared to male patients (26.42%). Conclusion: The high prevalence of MetS in T2DM patients at Tra Vinh University Hospital indicates the need to identify and address the risk factors associated with MetS in T2DM. Further studies are needed to develop effective strategies for preventing and managing MetS in T2DM patients.
