Abstract
Objectives: To describe the quality of life (QoL) among people with chronic kidney disease undergoing long-term hemodialysis at Central Transport Hospital. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 122 chronic kidney disease patients in the final stage treated by long-term hemodialysis at the Nephrology – Urology Department, Central Transport Hospital. SF36 QoL assessment tool was applied to assess the QoL (Poor: 0 – 25 points; Average: 26 – 50 points; Fair: 51 – 75 points; Good: 76 – 100 points). Results: the SF36 QoL score of patients was 51,8 ± 23,7 (Total: 100 points). Physical and Mental health mean scores were 44,4 ± 26,2 and 59,3 ± 24,1, respectively. 16,4% of patients had poor QoL, 35,2% of patients had average QoL, 22,2% of patients had fair QoL and 26,2% of patients had good QoL. Conclusions: the SF36-QoL score of chronic kidney failure patients undergoing long-term hemodialysis was at an average level (51.8 ± 23.7 out of 100 points), in which the mean score of physical health was lower than that of mental health (44,4 ± 26.2 versus 59.3 ± 24.1). In clinical practice, it is necessary to evaluate regularly the QoL of patients on hemodialysis to promptly consult and have appropriate interventions in order to improve the quality of patients specifically patients’ physical health status.
