ASSESS THE RESULTS OF TRAINING COURSE TO IMPROVE NURSE’S KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CARING PATIENTS WITH PORT-A-CATH IN HANOI MEDICAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Abstract

Descriptive study assessing the knowledge of 111 nurses at Hanoi Medical University hospital before and after training course of caring patients with port-a-cath. Nurses were interviewed with a questionare before and after training to find demographic characteristics, work experience , knowledge of caring for patients with port-a-cath, complications related to port-a-cath. Results: mean age 29.9  ±  5.4 years old, 73% female, 27% male. 60.4% of nurses have worked less than 5 years. The group of nurses with bachelor and master degrees has a high rate of 69.4%, there was no intermediate level nurse. The majority of nurses had not been trained in caring patients with port-a-cath before (77.5%). The mean score of knowledge of nurses before training is 14.45 ± 3.77, after training is 20.91 ± 3.74, the difference is statistically significant with p < 0.001. There is a relationship between age group, gender, education level, department of work, working seniority, and experience in port-a-cath care with the mean score of nursing knowledge. Nurses need to be trained to improve their knowledge and practical skills in taking care of patients with port-a-cath.
