OVERVIEW OF RAPID ANTIGEN DETECTION TEST IN DIAGNOSING GROUP A STREPTOCOCCAL PHARYNGITIS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: Evaluation of rapid antigen detection test in diagnosing group A streptococcal pharyngitis. Study Design: Scoping review. Methods: We searched the database on PubMed, Medline, the electronic library of Hanoi Medical University from 2010 to 2022 related to rapid antigen detection test in diagnosing group A streptococcal pharyngitis. Results: 40 studies were included in this review. The similarity between RADT results and throat cultures is >90%. The sensitivity of the RADT mainly ranges from 80-95% and the specificity is very high with >95%. With the use of RADT to confirm the diagnosis of group A streptococcal pharyngitis, these patient groups have a markedly reduced rate of antibiotic use from 20-40%. Conclusions: Rapid antigen detection test has advantages: high sensitivity, high specificity, ease of implementation, short execution time and with >90% similarity with throat cultures. Therefore, rapid antigen test is a widely used test in clinical practice, contributing to reducing antibiotic prescribing rates by up to 40%.
