Abstract

Objectives: Describe the situation of skipping breakfast, survey the factors related to breakfast skipping status in adolescents aged 12-15 years. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 1625 students aged 12-15 years old at 5 secondary schools in Thanh Hoa province in 2019. Results: Our study included a total of 1625 children aged 12-15 years. The rate of children skipping breakfast is 26%, increasing statistically significantly with age. Logistic regression analysis on factors related to skipping breakfast showed a statistically high rate of skipping breakfast in the 12-15 year old group, education of parents and children. Conclusions: The results of this cross-sectional study show that the rate of breakfast skipping among adolescents in Vietnam is not too different from that in other regions of the world. The main reason for skipping breakfast in teenagers is mainly due to not having breakfast time, considering breakfast unimportant and not having money for breakfast. Breakfast skipping has been identified as a significant public health concern requiring stakeholder intervention.
