QUALITY OF LIFE IN PATIENTS WITH LARYNGEAL CANCER AFTER TOTAL LARYNGECTOMY

Abstract

Background: Total laryngectomy in laryngeal cancer leads to lifelong changes in physical, psychological and social functioning, severely affecting normal daily activities and the patient's quality of life. Objectives: To survey the quality of life in patients with laryngeal cancer after total laryngectomy and find out some factors related to the patient's quality of life. Method: Retrospective study on 47 patients with total laryngectomy at University Medical center HCMC with the EORTC-C30 and EORTC-H&N35 toolkits. Then, analysis was performed to assess the influence of several factors on the patient's quality of life. Result: The overall quality of life of patients after total laryngectomy < 80 points, with a mean score of 50.9 ± 19.4 (16.7 -100 points). Functional index: psycho-emotional index and social integration were slightly reduced. Symptom index: fatigue, insomnia, decreased sense of smell-taste, voice disturbance, communication ability, sexual impairment, cough, feeling sick were mildly and moderately affected. Age factors > 60, female gender, had additional treatment after surgery were factors affecting the patient's quality of life. Conclusion: The overall quality of life of patients after total laryngectomy was moderately impaired.
