Abstract

Objective: To describe magnetic resonance imaging of cerebral venous thrombosis. Subjects and methods: A prospective, descriptive study of 38 patients with cerebral venous thrombosis treated at the Neurology Center, Bach Mai Hospital from March 2020 to June 2021. Results: The mean age was 42.4 ± 14.8, male/female ratio was 1.2:1. On magnetic resonance imaging, the most common brain parenchymal injury was cerebral infarction (31.6%), followed by cerebral hemorrhage (21.1%), hemorrhagic transformation (18.4%). The rate of parenchymal lesions between the two hemispheres was equivalent. The most common lesions sites were parietal lobe (39,5%) and frontal lobe (31.6%). Less common lesions sites were the occipital lobe (21.1%) and the temporal lobe (21.1%), the rarest site of lesions was the hippocampus (2.6%). The most common locations of thrombosis included the superior sagittal sinus (73.7%), the transverse sinus (63.2%), and the sigmoid sinus (47.4%). The signal of the thrombus may be hyperintense, isointense, or hypointense on routine MRI sequences. Conclusions: On magnetic resonance imaging, cerebral infarction is the most common brain parenchymal lesion (31.6%). The superior longitudinal sinus was the most common site for sinus thrombosis (73.7%), followed by the transverse sinus (63.2%) and the sigmoid sinus (47.4%).
