Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To assess the nutritional status of patients before and after total laryngectomy due to cancer in the National Otorhinorarynology Hospital of Vietnam in 2022. Methods: A cross-sectional study on 82 patients before and after total laryngectomy due to cancer at the Oncology Department of the National Otorhinorarynology Hospital of Vietnam. Results: The percentage of malnutrition of patients with total laryngectomy due to cancer before surgery was quite high (19.5%) and after surgery it was increased significantly up to 25.5% according to BMI and also to 25.6% according to PG-SGA. After surgery, nearly 70% of patients lost weight; in which, 32.9% of patients lost less than 5% of their weight and concentrated in the group under 60 years old and also 23.5% of patients over 60 years old lost ≥10% of their weight. Conclusion: Evaluation of nutrition status of patients before and after total laryngectomy due to cancer is a necessary activity. Should be paid attention to patients aged 60 years and older because this is a group at high risk of malnutrition after surgery.
