Abstract

Aim: to describe the characteristics of male patients and the quality of semen at the andrological clinic, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on male patients at the first visit at the andrological clinic, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital in 2022. Results: 999 patients (patients) aged 19 to 58 (mean 30.8) were eligible to participate in the study, of which 759 patients had semen analysis results. The most visited patients are in the age group 30-39 (46.5%). The reasons for going to the doctor were 52.6% for reproductive health check, 28.3% for desiring a baby, 11.1% for the reason involving urogenital infections, and 8% for problems related to sexual dysfunction. Male patients have bad habits such as using alcoholic beverages and smoking cigarettes with a rate of 72% and 44%, respectively. Notably, spontaneous use of supplements and unknown origin-derived traditional medicines has not only improved reproductive health, but also significantly reduced semen quality (POR=2.46, 95%CI 1.09-5.58) in patients with unknown origin-derived traditional medicine. Abnormal semen was observed in all groups of male patients for different reasons. Conclusion: Male patients who come to the hospital for examination at PSHN are mainly related to reproductive health checks (not including infertility). The rate of abnormal semen analysis was found in all groups of patients and was related to unhealthy lifestyle habits, especially the spontaneous use of unknown origin-derived traditional medicines.
