Abstract

Background: Hip dislocation is more common nowadays in developing countries. Follow up the long-term results after treatment of hip dislocation helps to identify patient’s complications and how to prevent or reduce those complications. Researches in Vietnam regarding this subject are still limited. Objective: To evaluate the long-term results after treatment of simple traumatic hip dislocation. Methods: Cross-sectionally described patients with simple traumatic hip dislocation treated at Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Ho Chi Minh City from January 2014 to December 2019. Long-term results were assessed by functional hip scores and X-rays. Result: The study comprised of 36 patients, including 13 males and 23 females. The mean age was 43.5 ± 15.6. The position of dislocation was balanced on both sides, with the direction being mainly posterior (66.7%). The mean trauma – reduction time was 9.3 ± 6.0 hours, mean length of stay was 2.8 ± 0.8 days and the mean time to weight-bearing was 4.7 ± 1.3 weeks. After 6.4 ± 1.5 years of follow-up, the mean VAS score was 1.4 points, 75% of patients squatted easily, 91.7% had excellent results according to Harris, 22.2% excellent according to Merle d'Aubigne, 77.8% excellent according to Thompson Epstein. Two patients with hip osteoarthritis according to Tonnis and 2 patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head according to Steinberg. Conclusion: In long-term results, most patients with simple traumatic hip dislocation achieved excellent and good function. The frequency of hip arthritis and avascular necrosis complications was low.
