Abstract

Epilepsy is a chronic disease of the brain, characterized by a tendency to recurrent seizures, accounting for about a quarter of all neurological diseases and significantly affecting the quality of life (QoL) of patients. Identification of several factors relating to the QoL of patients with epilepsy play an important role in improving the QoL of patients. Targets: adoption of QOLIE-31 questionnaire to assess quality of life of inpatients at Neurology Centre of Bach Mai Hospital. Subjects and methods: A cross - sectional descriptive study on 60 in-patients diagnosed with epilepsy at the Neurology Centre - Bach Mai Hospital from October 2022 to April 2023. Results: there are 34 male patients (56.7%) and 26 female patients (43.4 %) with a mean age of 41.93 ± 15.75. The mean overall QOLIE-31 score is 56.53 ± 13.60. As the mean overall QOLIE-31 score for male patients is 57.82 while that for female patients is 54.85, this difference is statistically meaningless due to p > 0.05. The group of patients under 40 has QoL scores 8.12 higher than the group over 40. The group of patients with university and postgraduate education has the best quality of life. Seizure frequency and treatment regimen affect the patients' quality of life scores. There is no difference in the QOLIE – 31 overall score among the seizure types. Conclusion: In this study, the mean overall QOLIE-31 scores of study subjects are 56.53 ± 13.60. Factors about age, education, job status, seizure frequency and treatment regimen explicitly associated with the quality of life of patients with epilepsy.
