Abstract

Background: In cancer surgery, information about the tumor (size, location, mobility status, tumor histopathology results, etc.) will help evaluate the possibility of surgery and treatment results. Objective: To determine tumor characteristics in patients with low rectal cancer undergoing laparoscopic surgery using extra-levator perineal excision in prone position at Can Tho. Materials and methods: Prospective study, describing a series of cases on 45 patients with low rectal cancer stages I, II, III, in Can Tho City from December 2018 to June 2023. Results: 45 patients with low rectal cancer were hospitalized mainly with symptoms of hematochezia (82.2%); Tumor location was 24.4% anterior, 28.9% posterior, 24.4% lateral (R) and 24.4% (L), and 22.2% annular; The majority of tumors had a vertical dimension > 3 cm (88.9%) and a horizontal dimension ≤ 5 cm (82.2%); 44.4% of gross tumors were cauliflower, 33.3% were ulcerative, and 22.2% were annular; 46.7% of tumors were moderately mobile; Stage T2 tumors accounted for 28.9%, T3 accounted for 71.1%, no stage T1, T4 was recorded; The level of tissue differentiation was mainly moderate 91%. Based on postoperative histopathological results, 20% of the disease was in stage I, 33.3% in stage II, and 46.7% in stage III. Conclusions: Majority of low rectal cancer had large size, moderately differentiated, in tumor stage T3 and in stage III.
