Abstract

Background: In the world, road traffic accidents and drowning are among the leading causes of death among children. In Vietnam, the rate of road traffic accidents and drowning among children in general and junior high school students in particular tends to increase. In Hue city, there has not been any research on traffic accidents and drowning in junior high school students. Objectives: Describe the situation, assess road traffic accident and drowning prevention skills and explore some related factors of junior high school students in Hue city. Method: A Cross-sectional was study on 866 students from grades 6 to 9 at 4 secondary schools in Hue city from (November 1^st, 2021 - December 31^st, 2021). Result: The rate of students having road traffic accidents in the past 1 year was 2.3%. The rate of students drowning in the past 1 year was 0.1%. The percentage of students with good traffic accident prevention skills is 58.1%, drowning is 38%. The study found a relationship between grade level and students' traffic accident prevention skills (p<0.05). Conclusion: The current rate of road traffic accidents and drowning in the year is not high, but road traffic accident and drowning prevention skills are still low, it is necessary to strengthen communication, education and training in road traffic accident prevention skills, and drowning for students. The research results will serve as a basis for the health sector to coordinate with the education sector in developing more effective health education programs as well as traffic accident and drowning prevention programs.
