RESULTS OF TREATMENT OF PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR IN INFANTS BY APPLYING CLOTRIMAZOL 1%

Abstract

Objectives: Evaluate the outcomes of the treatment of pityriasis versicolor in infants by applying clotrimazole 1% cream. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 46 children aged from 2 to 24 months who were diagnosed with pityriasis versicolor. Children were treated with clotrimazole 1% cream, applied two times daily for two weeks. Evaluate the outcomes of the treatment after 2 weeks and 4 weeks, cure when fungal examination are negative. Results: After 2 weeks, 2/7 children had no skin scales, 97,8% of children did not change in patch’s color, 1 child reduced the lesion area from over 10% to less than 10%, 80,4% of children had negative fungal examination and after 4 weeks of treatment, there was no case of a positive fungal examination. After 2 weeks, 63% of children had not fungus growth when cultured. After 4 weeks of treatment, 8 children were re-examined and negative fungal culture. Adequate application of medication and drying clothes in direct sunlight are related to treatment results (p < 0.05), increasing the cure rate after 2 weeks. Conclusions: Topical clotrimazole 1% is effective in treatment of pityriasis versicolor in children under 2 years old. Adequate application of medication and drying clothes in direct sunlight help to increase treatment effectiveness.
