Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with elongated styloid process and the relationship between clinical and paraclinical and post-operative outcomes of patients with elongated styloid process. Material and methods: Retrospective descriptive study combined with prospective study on 21 patients diagnosed with elongated styloid process and surgery to remove the styloid process at the National ENT Hospital from 8/2018 – 8/2023. Results: male/female ratio is 1/2, average age of patients is 45.9 ±10.54. The majority of patients had a relatively long illness, an average about 24 months. 100% of patients present with swallowing, mainly on one side (61.90%), on clinical examination, the tip of the styloid process was palpable in 26/29 SP - 89.7%, and 100% of pation press tonsil has high pain. On CT images, the average styloid length is 3.69 ± 0.99 cm, the average α angle is 63.42 ± 3.47 and the average length of a edge is 1.69 ± 0.52 cm. Conclusion: Elongated styloid process is a easily missing diagnosis. Diagnosis is based on clinical and CT scans. Surgical treatment to remove the styloid process had the best results.
