Abstract

Objective: Assessment of nutrition status in children under 5 years old, mothers' knowledge and practices in childcare, and nutrition intervention activities in some disadvantaged communes in the Northwest and Central Highlands regions. Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive study, combining quantitative and qualitative research. Results: The prevalence of stunting in children under 5 years old in the surveyed areas was 26%. The prevalence of wasting in children under 5 years old was 8.3%. The percentage of mothers with knowledge in breastfeeding reached 57%, while the practice reached 41%. The percentage of mothers with knowledge and practice in complementary feeding reached 27%. Nutrition intervention activities currently only have symbolic significance due to the lack of human and financial resources, coupled with significant cuts in budget. The causes lie in insufficient investment and low budget, affecting material facilities, human resources, and budget allocation for implementing programs, resulting in many limitations. Conclusion: Malnutrition among children under 5 years old in these communes remains prevalent. The percentage of mothers with knowledge and practice in childcare is low and inaccurate in many aspects. The study also highlights many shortcomings in the nutrition intervention activities for children's malnutrition, emphasizing the need for planning and implementing resource supplementation solutions for disadvantaged areas.
