Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and the limit of the modified ankle orthoses for preventing equinus deformity in cosmetic leg-lengthening patients. Subject and methods: In a retrospective control study, 90 adult patients underwent cosmetic bilateral leg-lengthening using the LON method at 108 Military Central Hospital from January 2012 to December 2022 were divided into three groups: 30 patients without ankle orthoses for preventing equinus deformity (group I); 30 patients using ankle orthoses for preventing equinus deformity (group II) and 30 patients using modified ankle orthoses for preventing equinus deformity (group III). Results: After removing the external fixation, the rate of equinus deformity, the range of ankle dorsiflexion, and the rate of cutaneous lengthening of the Achilles tendon were significantly different in the three groups with P<0.05. Conclusion: Equinus deformity was observed for 37 out of 90 patients who underwent bilateral leg lengthening. The rate and severity of Equinus deformity is proportional to the amount of leg lengthening. Modified ankle orthoses are simple, low-cost, and highly effective. It reduces the incidence and severity of equinus deformity.
