Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of chronic sinusitis in adults at the National Otorhinorarynology Hospital of Vietnam. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on patients over 18 years of age who were examined and diagnosed with chronic sinusitis from September 2023 to January 2024. Results: The age group from 31-45 years old had the highest proportion (40,4%), with the least occurrence in the ≥60 age group (6,4%). The average age was 37,8 ± 10,6. The male/female patient ratio was 1.1/1 (male: 53,2%, female: 46,8%). Most patients (63,8%) had been suffering from the disease for 1-3 years. Nasal discharge was observed in 100% of the patients in the study. Following this, nasal congestion was found in 42/47 patients, accounting for 89,4%. Olfactory disorders were least common, found in 20 patients, representing 42,6%. Cough was the most common secondary symptom at 55,3%, followed by sleep disorders and bad breath, at 40,4% and 27,7% respectively. Postnasal drip was the highest at 76,6% of patients. The nature of the nasal discharge was mainly purulent and cloudy, found in 24 patients (51,1%). The results show that bilateral nasal congestion was most common at 90,5%. The majority of patients (40/42) experienced intermittent nasal congestion, representing 95,2%. There were 2 patients with severe, continuous congestion, making up 4,8%. Conclusion: Nasal discharge (100%) and nasal congestion (89,4%) are the two main and most common symptoms in patients with chronic sinusitis. The nature of the nasal discharge is predominantly purulent and cloudy (51,1%). Nasal congestion is mainly intermittent, bilateral, and of moderate severity.
